Job Description: Controller (Family Office)
Location: New York, NY (Hybrid: 3 days in office, 2 days remote)
Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Compensation: $250,000 – $400,000 all in cash + equity Growth Path: Direct track to CFO within 24 months
Position Overview: We are seeking a highly detailed, "roll-up-your-sleeves" Controller to oversee the financial and accounting operations of a prominent New York City family office. This role requires an absolute must-have background in private equity fund accounting. You will manage a lean team, including an internal bookkeeper, while directly executing complex accounting functions across a diverse portfolio of assets. The ideal candidate thrives in a high-touch, meticulous environment and is ready to step into a CFO role within two years.
Key Responsibilities: Investment & Fund Accounting: Oversee and execute complex accounting for private equity funds, co-investments, commercial real estate ventures, and a high-value art collection. Operational Execution: Manage daily cash management, including the initiation, verification, and execution of high-volume wire transfers. Team Management: Supervise, mentor, and review the day-to-day work of the internal bookkeeper. Financial Reporting & Controls: Prepare accurate, timely financial statements, net asset value (NAV) calculations, and performance reporting for all entities. Tax & Audit Coordination: Act as the primary liaison for external auditors and tax professionals to ensure seamless year-end reporting and compliance. Detail-Oriented Oversight: Maintain pristine, audit-ready financial records with a deep focus on accuracy and risk mitigation.
Required Qualifications
Experience: Minimum 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a heavy emphasis on private equity accounting (fund or family office setting).
Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of partnership accounting, waterfall distributions, capital calls, and multi-entity consolidation. Asset Class Exposure: Proven familiarity or direct experience accounting for commercial real estate and alternative assets like fine art. Mindset: A true "roll-up-your-sleeves" worker who is equally comfortable setting high-level strategy and handling granular data entry or operational tasks.
