This search is part of a broader initiative to expand investigators across basic, population, and translational cancer research, and applicants with a population science research focus are encouraged to apply. Recruitment is for tenured and tenure-track faculty applicants with an MD, PhD, or MD/PhD at all academic ranks and includes academic appointment in one or more of 27 academic departments across the HSOM, several of which rank in the top 10 nationally.
Successful applicants will join The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of the first eight Cancer Centers designated by the National Cancer Institute ( NCI ) in 1972, which has been continuously funded by the NCI since its inception 54 years ago. It is the only NCI -designated comprehensive cancer center in a four-state region. The O’Neal has many areas of research excellence and has placed an emphasis on developing and supporting team science focused on the most important questions in population science and cancer biology, with a premium placed on multidisciplinary research that translates important discoveries to improve public health practice and clinical care in Alabama and beyond.
The O’Neal has over 400 members conducting exceptional cancer research across four interdisciplinary scientific programs, including a robust Cancer Control and Population Sciences Research Program ( CCPS ). CCPS, together with investigators across UAB, focus on understanding and reducing the burden of cancer across the cancer continuum, from prevention and early detection and etiology through treatment, survivorship, caregiving, and end-of-life care. The program encompasses expertise in cancer epidemiology, behavioral and social science, implementation science, health services and outcomes research, cancer disparities, community-engaged research, and quantitative and population-based methods.
The O’Neal programs, supported by a broad array of institutional shared resources, allow access to cutting-edge technologies, expertise (e.g., biostatistics/bioinformatics, artificial intelligience, community-engaged research, health services research), an integrated electronic health record data warehouse, tumor registry, and clinical trials infrastructure. The O’Neal Office for Community Outreach and Engagement supports a statewide infrastructure of community partnerships and community health workers that facilitate O’Neal research and its relevance for the community. The O’Neal raises over $5M per year from the community that is entirely invested in pilot grants and research initiatives.
UAB’s major investment in research infrastructure, its large campus with 11 schools and colleges, and its health system encompassing multiple hospitals and over 150 outpatient clinics serving more than 1,000,000 patients annually provides a unique environment for innovative, multidisciplinary research among population science researchers and between population and basic science.
