Assistant Director, Grassroots & Political Engagement POSITION OBJECTIVE: E ngage state Farm Bureaus and their members in grassroots advocacy tactics, political initiatives and Farm Bureau’s policy development process. Strengthen and expand the organization’s political and advocacy impact through innovative programming, strategic initiatives, and data-driven analysis.
REPORTS TO: Managing Director, Advocacy & Political Affairs
LOCATION: Washington, DC; eligible to earn telework 2 days/week
PAY RANGE: $95,000 - $115,000 annually, commensurate with experience
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Identify opportunities to optimize AFBF’s grassroots advocacy efforts and political affairs initiatives, using original analysis and data-backed strategy. Execute collective strategy to broaden AFBF’s reach and political footprint.
Develop, prepare, and deliver training programs, specifically campaign training seminars, that will help state Farm Bureaus increase their overall effectiveness in grassroots advocacy and political affairs activities. This includes delivering presentations during state Farm Bureau visits, national conferences and AFBF leadership committee meetings and as needed for other groups.
Manage political engagement programs, like iFarmiVote. Track key races and political trends and analyze in the context of agriculture and rural America.
Identify and recruit agriculture advocates and leaders to regularly engage in advocacy and the political process.
Serve as subject matter expert to promote and build strong political affairs programs with state Farm Bureaus.
Deliver legislative and political briefings, political analysis, and other information to AFBF and state Farm Bureaus.
Increase effectiveness of advocacy programs for state partners and grassroots advocates.
Serve on internal cross-functional teams in support of organizational goals and objectives.
Execute online grassroots advocacy campaigns as needed.
Assist in the preparation and management of the AFBF Policy Development process, including the annual Resolutions Committee meeting and Business Session of the Delegate Body.
Assist with the annual voting delegate session, including creating and editing materials related to the AFBF policy book and distributing materials to states.
Assist with planning, preparing, and marketing of AFBF conferences with an advocacy track.
Develop and cultivate strong working relationships with state Farm Bureau leadership and staff.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Communicate with AFBF staff and state Farm Bureau staff with respect to grassroots advocacy, congressional relations and policy implementation. Operate as a team member of the Public Affairs Department.
EDUCATION OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in a professional environment
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience
Strong operational understanding of executive and legislative branches of federal government
Experience serving on internal cross-functional working groups, committees or task forces
Strong organizational and program management skills
Strong communication and public speaking skills
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/SKILLS:
Capitol Hill/Executive Branch/political campaign experience
Training or facilitation experience
Familiarity with advocacy software
Knowledge of agriculture
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to travel for on-site meetings
Ability to work evening or weekends as needed
