Description
Position Summary: The New York City school system is the largest in the country, composed of nearly 900,000 students and 75,000+ teachers in more than 1,600 schools. The Chief Financial Officer oversees a budget of approximately $42 billion and is responsible for the financial management and stewardship of the nation's largest public school system. Working closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Chief of Staff serves as a strategic aide responsible for supporting executive communications, coordinating priorities, preparing executive materials, and advancing special initiatives within the Office of the CFO. The position helps ensure information flows efficiently across the Finance Division, executive priorities are coordinated effectively, and key commitments are tracked through completion. The Chief of Staff serves as a central point of coordination for meetings, briefings, presentations, stakeholder engagement, and special projects. Working collaboratively with Finance leadership and partner offices, the position supports the effectiveness of the CFO's office through executive support, communications, project coordination, and strategic initiative management. Performs related work.
Reports to: Chief Financial Officer Direct Reports: N/A Key Relationships: All divisions under the Office of the Chief Financial Officer and the Division of Finance Administration and Human Resources; Program Offices across NYCPS.
Responsibilities: Executive Coordination Provides leadership and support to the CFO in a broad range of strategic areas across executive priorities, meetings, communications, and special initiatives. Maintains communication on behalf of the Chief Financial Officer, including the dissemination of important policy directives. Represents the Chief Financial Officer and senior leaders across finance in internal, external and intergovernmental relations. Coordinates meetings, briefings, presentations, and follow-up activities for the CFO and Finance leadership team. Tracks executive priorities, action items, commitments, and deliverables and facilitates appropriate follow-up with stakeholders. Maintains systems and tools used to monitor progress on strategic priorities, key initiatives, and executive requests. Prepares briefing materials, presentations, hearing materials, talking points, and other executive communications. Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Supports the development, review, and dissemination of internal and external communications on behalf of the Office of the CFO. Facilitates information sharing among Finance divisions, partner offices, and key stakeholders. Coordinates responses to executive inquiries, stakeholder requests, and time-sensitive matters. Supports preparation for executive engagements, hearings, briefings, and presentations involving Finance leadership. Project Coordination Coordinates special projects and cross-functional initiatives sponsored by the Office of the CFO. Facilitates collaboration among stakeholders to support execution of organizational priorities and strategic objectives. Identifies risks, barriers, and implementation challenges and elevates issues as appropriate. Assists in coordinating responses and solutions to issues requiring executive attention. Supports the implementation and follow-through of initiatives, ensuring timely completion of deliverables.
Qualification Requirements: Minimum A master's degree from an accredited college in economics, finance, accounting, business or public administration, human resources management, management science, operations research, organizational behavior, industrial psychology, statistics, personnel administration, labor relations, psychology, sociology, human resources development, political science, urban studies, or a closely related field, or a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and two years of satisfactory full-time professional experience, for educational program(s) and/or institution(s) in one or a combination of the following: working with the budget of a large public or private concern in budget administration, accounting economic or financial administration, fiscal or economic research; management or methods analysis, operations research, organizational research or program evaluation; educational, personnel or public administration, recruitment, position classification, personnel relations, labor relations, employee benefits, staff development, employment program planning/administration, labor market research, economic planning, fiscal management, or a related area, 18 months of this experience must have been in an executive, managerial, administrative, consultative or supervisory capacity. Supervision must have included supervising staff performing professional work in the areas described above; or A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory full-time professional experience as described in"1"above, including the 18 months of executive, managerial, administrative, consultative or supervisory experience described in"1"above; or Education and/or experience equivalent to “ 1 ”, or “ 2 ” above. Graduate education in areas other than those mentioned above, may be substituted for the professional experience, but not for the 18 months of managerial experience described in “ 1 ” above, at the rate of 15 graduate semester credits from an accredited college or university for 6 months up to a maximum of 1 year of professional experience. However, all candidates must possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and 18 months executive, managerial, administrative, consultative or supervisory experience, as described in “ 1 ” above. Preferred Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, build consensus, and influence outcomes across multiple stakeholders without formal supervisory authority. Experience supporting executive leadership in a large, complex organization. Strong project management, coordination, organizational, and stakeholder relationship management skills. Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills. Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism. Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple initiatives simultaneously, maintain attention to detail, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Creative problem solver with the ability to analyze issues, identify solutions, and support implementation. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Power Point, and Outlook. Experience in finance, budgeting, government, education, or public administration preferred. Knowledge of New York City Public Schools and/or experience working in the New York City public sector is strongly preferred.
