The Middle School Social Science Teacher must be a passionate and skillful teacher, who is eager to invest their talents in our middle school social science program. They must establish a supportive and engaging environment for middle school students (grades 6-8), demonstrate the ability to create developmentally appropriate curricula, work collaboratively with colleagues and caregivers, have excellent communication skills, and demonstrate teaching proficiency and comfort with a variety of different teaching and learning styles. In addition, this teacher will have completed coursework or possess teaching experience in specific subfields of history and social sciences related to their teaching responsibilities. As a middle school social science teacher, you will teach a combination of Geography, Ancient Cultures, and American History (depending upon the needs each particular year).Expectations Embrace the vision of The Miami Valley School, incorporate the MVS Immersion Method™, and Social Emotional Learning (SEL), in the classroom Develop a lifelong appreciation for healthy and informed decision‑making in their students Demonstrate an ability to develop rapport with students Commit to ongoing professional development Lead and/or advise extracurricular activities, which include student clubs and athletics Communicate with caregivers, both orally and in writing, effectively and often Meet all other expectations and responsibilities as outlined in the Faculty Handbook
Primary Responsibilities:
- Teach 3 sections of middle school social science
- Lead/Co-lead an Immersion program in January, and potentially develop and propose new Immersion programs
- Update Canvas, MVS’ Learning Management Software (LMS), and Blackbaud regularly to keep both students and families informed about student progress and performance
- Attend faculty meetings
Fulfill all other faculty responsibilities that may occur outside the school day, including writing reports and planning, chaperoning student events, attending school-related functions, which include but are not limited to: caregiver Information Night (CIN), Immersion CIN, Immersion Open House, and Middle School Closing Ceremonies
Fulfill lunch or recess duties 2-3 days per week as assigned by the division director.
Communicate individual student concerns, issues, and successes.
Act as a point person for caregivers.
Support the school and its leadership as it relates to discipline and community service.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate or Master’s Degree in history or related field
- Demonstrate computer literacy and proficiency (e.g., Google suite of applications, student information systems and online grade book programs)
- Desire to work with pre-teen and early adolescent students in an active, experiential setting.
