Entry-Level Medical-Surgical Nursing Assistant

Methodist Hospital, part of SA Health, is seeking a Nurse Extern to join our Med Surg team on a PRN basis. In this role, you will work under the supervision of experienced Registered Nurses to provide compassionate, safe, and high-quality patient care. Responsibilities include assisting with patient assessments, basic procedures, documentation, and coordination of care while upholding hospital policies and standards. Assist Registered Nurses with patient care on medical-surgical units under direct supervision Obtain and document vital signs, intake and output, and patient observations accurately in the electronic health record Provide basic care including hygiene, toileting, feeding, positioning, and comfort measures Support patient mobility and ambulation using safe patient handling techniques Observe and promptly report changes in patient status to the RN or charge nurse Assist in preparing patients and rooms for admissions, discharges, and procedures Maintain a clean, safe, and organized patient environment, ensuring equipment and supplies are stocked Follow infection prevention, fall prevention, and safety protocols consistently Participate in interdisciplinary communication and handoffs to support coordinated care Engage in ongoing learning, skills development, and feedback to prepare for transition to an RN role Basic patient care and nursing assistant skills Vital signs measurement and interpretation of basic trends Electronic health record (EHR) documentation Infection control and standard precautions Safe patient handling and mobility techniques Basic wound and post-operative care assistance Effective verbal and written communication Time management and task prioritization in a fast-paced environment Teamwork and collaboration with interdisciplinary staff Observation and reporting of changes in patient condition Customer service and patient-centered care Basic understanding of medical-surgical conditions and treatments Medical Insurance Dental Insurance Vision Insurance Life Insurance 401k Current enrollment in an accredited Registered Nurse (RN) program Completion of fundamental nursing coursework and clinical rotations (medical-surgical preferred) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Eligibility to sit for NCLEX-RN within 6–12 months preferred Previous experience as a nurse aide, patient care tech, or similar role is a plus
