Part-Time Project Position (up to 20 hours per week)
DEFINITION
The Education Ambassador Program has been developed to provide Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) program participants a with part-time work experience (up to 80 hours a month) during the school year at one (1) or more of our seven (7) Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) partner schools. Under general supervision of the Education Program Analyst and/or Resident & Community Services Coordinator, the primary role of the Education Ambassador is to support attendance projects at partner schools with a focus of decreasing chronic absenteeism & increasing parent engagement. In collaboration with the school site administrators and under the guidance of the FCP department, the Education Ambassador will serve as the liaison for families and students interacting partner schools and the OHA.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Engages parents and refers students and families to both school and community resources. Serves as a liaison to OHA families specifically; supports all students and families at respective OUSD school sites. Plans and coordinates attendance related activities and projects at assigned school site(s). Maintains records, assists in accessing resources, prepares and presents information to parents, students, school site(s) and OHA staff, performs other related work as required which may include:
Answers and directs phone calls, voicemail and email; greets visitors, students, parents and staff; responds to general questions; refers inquiries as appropriate.
Tracks and monitors school attendance rates under supervision of school attendance clerk; develops recognition program for students.
Updates and maintains attendance bulletin boards at school sites.
Prepares monthly reports on student/school sites attendance rates.
Creates attendance campaigns to promote daily school attendance.
Collaborates with principals, teachers, attendance clerks, and community school managers on developing ways to promote a perfect attendance culture.
Develops parent engagement activities at school sites and/or at OHA.
Attends meetings related to attendance and parent engagement.
Operates a variety of standard office equipment such as personal computer, phone, fax, calculator, copier, scanner or other school/OHA specific equipment.
Provides support to Education Initiative Program and out of school events such as Spring Break College Tour, Winter/Holiday Activities, Summer Lunch Program or other related activities and events.
Provides classroom and/or office support at school site(s).
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
May prepare a variety of handwritten or computer generated reports using established procedures and formats; performs other related work as assigned. May require working some evenings and weekends.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be a resident of the Oakland Housing Authority.
Must have a High school Diploma/GED or commit to enrolling to earn a High School diploma or its equivalent within 90 days of employment.
Must be in good standing with OHA lease agreements.
Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application submission.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY
Knowledge of : general school and office practices; basic project management skills and interpersonal skills. Basic record keeping, standard PC software and hardware including computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other related programs and systems; customer service principals.
Ability to : type at a rate of 20 net words per minute; perform general clerical works such as typing, filing and reception; learn the specific operation and procedures of the job; proofread material for grammatical, numerical and clerical accuracy, learn, understand, interpret, program regulations pertaining to the work assigned; file with accuracy; demonstrate effective communication skills; follow written and verbal instructions; be self-motivated; deliver excellent customer service to program participants, parents, residents and general public; exercise patience, professionalism, and sensitivity in working with diverse populations including low income families, individuals of a different race, ethnicity, language, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status or views; cleared for Tuberculosis (TB), fingerprinting and required security clearances for OUSD.
