Assistant Professor of AstronomyUNLV invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Astronomy, Department of Physics and Astronomy [R0153783].
Role of the Position The successful tenure‑track faculty candidate will be expected to establish and sustain an independently funded research program characterized by creativity and vision in astronomy and astrophysics. All areas of astronomy and astrophysics will be considered, including observational, theoretical, computational, and instrumentation-based research, and the successful candidate will have a strong commitment to excellence in graduate and undergraduate teaching, as well as to the mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program, to publish in leading peer‑reviewed journals, to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, to supervise graduate student research, and to contribute service to the department, the university, and the profession.
Profile of the Department The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers B.S., B.A., M.S. and Ph. D. degrees and supports active research programs in astronomy, condensed matter physics, atomic, molecular and optical physics, high‑pressure science and related areas.
Academically the department’s faculty members have research expertise in theoretical modeling and observations of black hole systems, accretion disks, jets and outflows, protoplanetary disks, exoplanets, and the interstellar medium. Their broader research interests include numerical astrophysics, high‑energy astrophysics, planet formation, gravitational waves, neutrino astrophysics, cosmology, and galactic astronomy.

Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires a Ph. D. or equivalent degree in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or a closely related discipline from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and two years of experience. Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.
Preferred Qualifications:
Postdoctoral research experience in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field.
A record of peer‑reviewed publications commensurate with career stage, demonstrating research independence and impact.
