JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Senior Project Engineer is responsible for the successful engineering and execution of complex mechanical and utility infrastructure projects from design and preconstruction through installation, commissioning, and project closeout. This is a customer-facing role for an experienced engineer who can take ownership of technically challenging projects, coordinate the engineering and construction process, and drive projects forward through completion. Projects may include major mechanical equipment replacements, central utility plant improvements, steam and condensate systems, chilled and hot water systems, piping replacements and reroutes, heat recovery systems, and other complex mechanical infrastructure upgrades. The Senior Project Engineer will work closely with SMI engineering, operations, subcontractors, equipment vendors, clients, and other project stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, technically sound, on schedule, and within budget. The role requires strong technical judgment combined with project execution capabilities. Responsibilities may include developing and reviewing engineering designs, specifying and procuring equipment, coordinating subcontractors, reviewing submittals, managing schedules and budgets, resolving field conditions, supporting outages and shutdowns, overseeing installation activities, and coordinating startup and commissioning. While the primary focus of this position is execution of awarded projects, the Senior Project Engineer may also support project development activities such as site surveys, constructability reviews, scope development, estimating, and engineering support for performance contracting and other project opportunities. The Senior Project Engineer may also perform standalone engineering studies and assessments under consulting contracts. Travel is required to support active projects, conduct site walkdowns, oversee critical installation activities, and support commissioning and closeout. The role requires the ability to safely access mechanical rooms, rooftops, basements, utility spaces, and industrial environments. A home office environment is required for engineering design, project planning, documentation, coordination, and project management activities when not traveling.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Adhere to SMI safety rules Take technical and project execution ownership of complex mechanical and utility infrastructure projects from design through commissioning and closeout Manage project implementation, including engineering, procurement, subcontractor coordination, installation, commissioning, and closeout activities Develop, review, and coordinate engineering designs, drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and other project deliverables Work with vendors to size and select required components and capital equipment and support procurement Develop and maintain project schedules Monitor project budgets, committed costs, and changes Ensure that scopes of work, responsibilities, schedules, and technical requirements are clearly communicated among project stakeholders Provide technical direction and resolve engineering and field issues that arise during construction Coordinate planned shutdowns, tie-ins, phasing, temporary systems, and other activities required to execute work within operating facilities Conduct site surveys, project walkdowns, constructability reviews, field verification, and LIDAR scanning as required Perform regular site visits to monitor project progress, quality, safety, schedule, and conformance with design requirements Coordinate startup, testing, commissioning, punch list completion, training, and project turnover Maintain organized project folders and complete project documentation Work with and understand operations department functions and stakeholders Lead or participate in project meetings and maintain clear written project updates for SMI operations, leadership, and clients Identify project risks, constraints, schedule impacts, and technical issues early and proactively develop solutions Manage multiple concurrent projects and priorities while maintaining accountability for project deliverables Support development of project scopes, budgets, estimates, and technical solutions for new opportunities as needed Develop energy conservation measures (ECMs), typically for performance contracts, when required Model costs and savings for developed scopes of work when required Oversee CAD design (2D & 3D) and drawing development as required for engineering deliverables Provide technical leadership and mentorship to project engineers, designers, and junior staff Uphold Steam Management’s Standards of Quality and Excellence Other related duties as assigned Travel as required to support project development and execution, estimated up to 50% travel depending on workloadPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (ME) or related field Registered Professional Engineer (PE) strongly preferred 7+ years of relevant engineering, project engineering, construction, or project delivery experience Demonstrated experience executing complex mechanical projects from engineering/design through construction and commissioning Strong understanding of mechanical systems, piping systems, equipment installation, and construction execution Experience with central utility systems including steam, boilers, condensate, hot water, chilled water, cooling towers, heat exchangers, pumps, or related mechanical equipment preferred Project management experience with subcontractor coordination, procurement, scheduling, cost management, and field execution Experience coordinating equipment replacements, piping modifications, shutdowns, tie-ins, and work within occupied or operating facilities Experience with energy performance contracts, ESCO projects, energy management, or utility rebate programs Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, submittals, RFIs, change management, and project documentation Proficiency in MS Office suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, Project); high proficiency in Excel Experience in process design including P&IDs, PFDs, heat and mass balance, equipment selection, and energy calculations Experience in AutoCAD Plant 3D or similar Ability to work independently and remotely while maintaining ownership and accountability for assigned projects Strong technical writing skills Professional demeanor and strong ability to collaborate effectively Willingness to train and mentor junior employeesPMP, CEM, or similar professional credentials SALARY & BENEFITSHighly competitive bonus packages;
