Apply for this role →*This role is directly hired by Michael W. Lynch, CFP®, ChFP®, CLU®, CASL (www.michaelwlynch.com).
About the Role:
We are looking for a bright, thoughtful, hard-working Financial Planning Consultant to join our financial planning team full-time, with the ability to work remotely. This is a client-facing planning position. It is ideally suited for someone who wants to learn the business the right way: working closely with experienced financial planners, preparing for client meetings, completing custom financial analysis with excel, helping develop financial plans, communicating with clients, while growing into a trusted planning professional. This is not a traditional sales role and does not include business development responsibilities. You will not be expected to prospect for or source new clients. However, you will interact directly with clients and may need to help them understand recommendations and encourage them to take appropriate action. In that sense, the role includes a consultative element that requires strong communication and influencing skills. You’ll Be on a Mission We are looking for someone who has a burning desire to be a financial planner—and achieve this through a non-sales channel. You can have a job, a career, or a mission. We want a person who is on a mission to be a top-tier financial advisor serving middle class millionaires. The right person will be curious, organized, detail-oriented, and a strong oral and written communicator. Strong writing, speaking, and presentation skills are essential.
What You’ll Do:
The Financial Planning Consultant will work closely with the lead advisor, other service advisors, and the planning team. Your primary function will be to be present at Zoom meetings with clients and prospective clients. Contributing in the meeting, preparing for them and following up with clients. These Zoom meetings will be 20 to 30 hours a week and will drive both your training and your secondary responsibilities.
Responsibilities will include:
Preparing for client meetings Using a financial calculator and excel to perform detailed financial planning analysis Researching financial planning, insurance and investment questions and developing solutions Helping create and update financial plans Reviewing client data, statements, insurance information, taxreturns, estate documents, and other planning materials Preparing follow-up items after meetings Drafting client communications Coordinating with the team to make sure client tasks are completed accurately and on time This role is a dream for someone who wants to become an excellent financial planner. It’s a nightmare for someone looking for a cushy job or easy money. Who Is This Role For This role may be a good fit if you: Have a burning desire to spend your professional life as a top-tier financial planner making a difference in people’s lives Are intellectually curious, like learning complex topics and are a lifetime learner Have a top 1 percent work ethic Like working as part of a team and are coachable Who This Role Is Not For This is probably not the right role if you are looking for: A traditional 9-to-5 job that provides “work life balance.” We are looking for a person who wants to be a top-tier professional. This is not fully compatible with work life balance in the early years. In this way, it is similar to comparable fields like law, medicine and professional sports. A narrow technical planning role with no communication responsibilitiesA short-term stop on the way to something else Schedule and Work Expectations This is a full-time position with the ability to work remotely. The role will generally require approximately 50 hours per week. There will be evening work. The lead planner often sees his last client at 7:30 pm. He also works roughly every other Saturday morning. Our firm offers many roles that are, at most, 40 hours a week. This is not one of those roles. You will work with people who end their day at 4:30 PM. You will not be one of these people. Because this is a remote role, the right candidate must be self-directed, responsive, and able to work effectively without constant supervision. Access to a good airport is helpful, as occasional travel may be required. Licensing and Credentials We are a hybrid team in a larger firm that generates 95 percent of our revenue from recurring sources. We are not “fee only” and never will be, as we serve a very diverse set of clients and want all the tools of our great trade available for appropriate use. As a result, candidates should either already have, or be willing and able to obtain, the following licenses: Series 7 Series 66 Life and health insurance licenses The CFP® designation is a plus but not required at the start. A strong desire to pursue and build a serious planning career is important. We will invest heavily in someone who has the right attitude, communication ability, and work ethic. About the Firm At present, we are a seven-person team with our own P&L inside the Barnum Financial Group, a large financial services firm. The team consists of a lead advisor who serves clients in a full-time capacity and a second advisor who is client-facing approximately 80% of the time. The remaining five team members include a Business Manager, Asset Manager, Operations Specialist, and two Financial Planning Specialists. You can learn about us at www.michaelwlynch.com and www.simpleandbig.com. Two things that often sets us apart from most other teams and firms and prevailing thoughts about how to be successful in this industry. First, we do not specialize in any one area or with any one group of people. The business was built by the lead advisor—a former professional writer—one client at a time through cold calling, face-to-face prospecting, published articles, a weekly radio show and 8-hour financial planning presentations at such places as ESPN, Yale New Haven Health Systems, Northeast Utility Systems, and Madison Square Garden Corporation. He left journalism and started the hard work of building a financial planning practice with the mission to bring the personalized experience he imagined the super-wealthy received from the financial service industry to the middle-class. He enjoys working with janitors and truck drivers as well as executives and surgeons. As a result, we keep our flat fees affordable, and we do not employ asset or income tests. We employ attitude tests. We will not work with negative people if we can ID it early. Second, for most of our clients and all our new clients, we complete an initial written financial plan and annual written progress reports, for which we charge a modest fee. We look at everything each year and put it in writing. Last year we completed more than 265 plans and progress reports. By mid-year 2026, we’ve completed 24 new plans for new clients. We are hiring because we are buried in referrals. Our business grows at the lead advisor’s target of 15 percent a year. The lead advisor is at capacity, and the other advisor is approaching it. We are therefore hiring to accommodate the demand for our services. We believe that most things in life, including businesses, are either green and growing or ripe and rotting. We don’t want to rot. After all, you can’t stand still on a bicycle. You also can’t learn to ride one at a seminar, quote the great sales trainer David Sandler. Our intention is to stay green and growing, keep the bike moving forward, and provide a crash course in the real world on how to ride it effectively for the right person.
Is this you?
Compensation This is a salary job. Our philosophy is to pay market rates for each of our roles and then create an excellent working environment that supports a fantastic life over the long run. (Yes, there is a difference between work-life balance at the start of your career. This is not a commission job so it will be salary, just to repeat.)We will use published data to determine starting salary. So, you can figure out what we will offer by doing a little internet research, as that is exactly what we will do to make your offer. Start with a Financial Planning Consultant and work from there. Be sure to use your current credentials, not the ones that you expect to achieve. As your progress in your mission with us, your compensation will increase accordingly. We have never lost an employee because they had a better offer elsewhere and we don’t intend to start with this position.*This role is directly hired by Michael W.
