Junior Shipping, Packaging, and Logistics Specialist The Junior Shipping, Packaging, and Logistics Specialist provides project-level support for shipping, packaging, waste characterization, classification, and logistics activities. The position is expected to complete required training and progress toward certification as a radioactive waste shipper while supporting assigned project objectives, regulatory compliance, and operational requirements. Additional duties may be assigned by the Project Manager. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may receive occupational exposures to ionizing radiation that are As Low As is Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) and within regulatory limits.
Key Responsibilities: Assist with the development of waste packaging plans that support safe, compliant, and efficient project execution. Identify appropriate waste containers and packaging configurations based on waste type, classification, transportation requirements, and project needs. Issue, track, and coordinate packaging use by project and supporting work groups. Support the design, selection, and use of specialty packages, as required. Support waste loading activities, including field assessments of loading techniques and field preparation of packages for shipment. Assist with the coordination of radioactive and mixed-waste shipments by truck, rail, or barge. Inspect packages after initial loading and complete required checklists for each package. Review radiological survey results for each package, including radiation and contamination surveys, to verify compliance with DOT requirements. Review vehicle and package radiological release surveys for shipping purposes and maintain appropriate supporting documentation. Assist with the preparation of required reports and tracking of waste-related metrics. Coordinate with internal groups to obtain characterization information and other data required to support compliant waste handling and shipment. Support other work groups as needed to meet project, safety, and compliance objectives. Complete required training to develop the skills necessary to become a certified DOT shipper within one year. Characterize and classify waste packages in accordance with applicable NRC and DOT regulations, procedures, and guidance. Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Manager. This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. However, the ability to communicate clearly, coordinate effectively with others, and provide task-level leadership when needed is expected.
Required Qualifications: Knowledge of environmental and radiological protection standards, regulations, and guidance. Understanding radiation protection principles, procedures, equipment, limitations, and field practices. Proficiency with Microsoft software applications and the ability to use databases and project-related systems. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with field-based and remote teams. Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet established objectives and deadlines. Ability to make sound decisions based on established regulatory requirements, procedures, and accepted practices. Commitment to industrial and radiological safety, including a respectful and questioning attitude toward safe work practices. Other duties as assigned. Bachelor of Science degree, Associate degree in Health Physics, Radiation Safety Technology, or a related field, and/or fifty (50) hours of related study and one (1) year of nuclear industry experience. Equivalent experience may be considered at the discretion of the hiring manager. Ability to read, interpret, and apply regulations, safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence and communicate effectively with individuals, project teams, customers, and organizational personnel. Ability to understand, use, and convert metric and radiological units; calculate values such as fractions, area, circumference, density, volume, weight, activity, specific activity, and dose rates; apply mathematical concepts used in radiation protection, waste characterization, and waste classification calculations; and apply practical judgment to written, oral, or diagram-based instructions involving multiple variables and non-standard conditions. To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient with internet applications, spreadsheet software, word processing software, Microsoft Access, and other relevant database tools. Following appropriate training, the individual should be able to use RADMAN, ELITE, and other radioactive waste characterization, classification, shipping, and reporting software. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use arms, hands, and fingers to handle or reach, and perform field-based activities. The employee may occasionally be required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, speak, or hear. Ladder and stair climbing will be required. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Use of a respirator may be required under certain conditions. Workdays may vary from 10 to 16 hours, subject to applicable weekly fatigue limits. While performing the duties of this position, the employee may receive occupational exposure to ionizing radiation that is maintained As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) and within applicable regulatory limits. Noise levels may range from quiet to moderate and may become very loud during demolition or field activities. Industrial work conditions at a decommissioning site may change frequently and can involve heavy equipment, power tools, dust, elevated noise, trip and fall hazards, falling-object hazards, variable field temperatures, and other safety considerations. Required personal protective equipment may include hard hats, steel-toe footwear, hearing protection, fall protection, and other equipment specified for the work being performed.
