Our client is seeking an experienced General Manager to lead the next phase of the company's growth and operational development in Texas.
Based in Alvarado, Texas, the General Manager will have overall responsibility for executing The company’s growth plan, including building the leadership and management organization, developing W-2 field capacity, expanding in-house self-perform capabilities, improving operational and financial performance, and developing new customer relationships throughout Texas.
This is a hands-on leadership position requiring a combination of telecommunications construction experience, operational leadership, organizational development, financial accountability, and business development capability.
Key Responsibilities:
Organizational Development & Leadership Lead the development and execution of the company’s overall growth and operating plan. Build a scalable W-2 organization capable of supporting both the existing business and future growth. Recruit, hire, develop, and retain the leadership, management, and field personnel required to support the business. Establish an effective management structure including Project Managers, Construction Managers, field supervisors, and other operational leadership as required. Establish clear accountability, performance expectations, and operating rhythms throughout the organization. Develop the next of leadership capable of supporting continued expansion. W-2 Field Capacity & Self-Performance Develop a strategy to transition toward greater W-2 self-performance while maintaining appropriate subcontractor relationships where they provide strategic value. Build and manage W-2 field crews across both: Aerial construction Underground construction Expand internal capabilities across the full range of telecommunications construction activities supported by the company. Evaluate opportunities to convert qualified existing subcontractor resources into company employees where appropriate. Establish the appropriate balance of W-2 and subcontractor capacity to support customer commitments, quality, profitability, and scalability. Ensure staffing, equipment, fleet, and field leadership are aligned with awarded workload and the company's growth plan. Operations & Execution Provide overall leadership for day-to-day operations. Ensure projects are properly staffed, planned, executed, and financially managed. Establish consistent operating processes across projects and customers. Drive accountability for safety, quality, production, schedule, customer satisfaction, and financial performance. Develop operating capacity ahead of growth while maintaining appropriate cost discipline. Work closely with Shared Services organizations, including Safety, Finance, Fleet, Human Resources, Business Development, and Digital Transformation. Financial Performance Own the operational performance of the company and manage the business with a strong focus on profitable growth. Develop annual operating plans, budgets, forecasts, staffing plans, and capital requirements. Maintain visibility into crew utilization, production, revenue, billing, backlog, collections, and profitability. Establish and maintain disciplined weekly and monthly reporting processes. Work with Finance and Project Controls to improve forecasting accuracy and ensure timely and accurate customer billing. Manage growth investments against the financial capacity of the business. Identify and address underperforming projects, customers, or areas of the operation. Business Development & Texas Growth Lead business development efforts throughout the State of Texas. Develop and execute a strategy to diversify company customer portfolios and reduce concentration risk. Market expanding self-perform capabilities to telecommunications carriers, fiber operators, broadband providers, utilities, general contractors, and other potential customers. Build relationships with customer executives, construction leaders, procurement organizations, and other key decision-makers. Identify, qualify, and pursue new construction opportunities that align with the company’s capabilities and financial objectives. Partner with leadership and Business Development resources on strategic pursuits and customer relationships. Translate new opportunities into executable operating plans, ensuring the company has the people, equipment, capital, and management capacity necessary to perform the work successfully. Initial Priorities
The General Manager's initial mandate will focus on four priorities:
1. Stabilize and Strengthen the Operating Model
Evaluate the existing organization, projects, financial performance, customer commitments, and operating processes and establish a clear plan for sustainable growth.
2. Build the W-2 Organization
Recruit and develop the leadership, management, and field organization necessary to operate the company as a scalable telecommunications construction company.
3. Expand Self-Perform Capability
Build meaningful W-2 aerial and underground construction capacity, reducing dependence on subcontractors and increasing ability to control safety, quality, production, schedule, and margin.
4. Grow and Diversify the Texas Business
Leverage capabilities and market presence to develop new customers and expand the company's addressable opportunity throughout Texas.
Qualifications:
Significant leadership experience within telecommunications, fiber, broadband, utility, or infrastructure construction. Demonstrated experience leading field-based construction organizations with both W-2 employees and subcontractors. Strong knowledge of aerial and underground telecommunications construction. Demonstrated ability to recruit, build, and lead management and field organizations. Experience managing multiple projects, customers, and field crews simultaneously. Strong financial and commercial acumen, including experience with P&L management, budgeting, forecasting, production, billing, and project profitability. Demonstrated ability to develop customer relationships and participate directly in business development. Strong understanding of the relationship between estimating, pricing, production, utilization, and gross margin. Proven ability to build processes and operating discipline within a growing organization. Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to operate effectively with field personnel, customers, and executive leadership. Texas telecommunications construction experience and established industry relationships strongly. Ability to work primarily from the company HQ in Alvarado, Texasand travel throughout Texas as required. Leadership Profile
The successful candidate will be anoperator and builder, not simply an administrator. This individual should be comfortable moving between the field, customer meetings, financial reviews, recruiting discussions, and executive-level strategy.
