Apply for this role →Company Overview:
Jones Sports Co., founded in 1971 in Portland, Oregon, is a heritage-driven golf brand rooted in craftsmanship, simplicity, and the belief that the game should be walked. Today, Jones designs and distributes premium golf bags, accessories, and lifestyle products for both direct-to-consumer and wholesale channels, serving golfers and partners around the world. With the integration of Forrester’s Outerwear, the company has expanded into technical apparel, blending Pacific Northwest-inspired performance outerwear with Jones’ timeless design ethos.
The Role:
Jones is growing, and we are investing in finance to keep pace and build the foundation for decades of profitable growth. We are hiring a hands-on Controller to own the books: the close, reconciliations, inventory and cost accounting, and internal controls. From there, you will develop our budgeting and forecasting. You will report to the owners and work with them everyday, partner with our existing finance team, and build out the team as the company grow. This role is for someone who does the work, not someone who only reviews it. What You’ll Own The Books. Monthly close on a published calendar, including intercompany with Forrester's. Every balance-sheet account reconciled every month. Documented policies and controls, multi-state sales tax with out outside provider, and the year-end review and taxes with our CPA firm. Inventory and Cost. Tie Net Suite item ledger to the GL monthly. Own landed cost (product, freight, duty) so margin is right at the SKU level. Reconcile Shopify to Net Suite. Planning and Cash. Monthly financials with commentary ownership can act on. The annual budget, a monthly reforecast, the 13-week cash forecast, and working capital. Strategy. Be ownership's financial partner on pricing, product and channel mix, investments, financing, and growth opportunities. Build the model, test the assumptions, and make a recommendation.
What Success Looks Like:
90 days: Three closes on schedule. Every balance-sheet account reconciled. The item ledger tied to the GL.6 months: Close completed within ten business days. The 13-week cash forecast published weekly. The first annual budget approved.12 months: A clean year-end. Forecast within ten percent at net income. Ownership brings you into major decisions before they are made.
What You Bring:
7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including running a month-end close. Bachelor's in Accounting or Finance. Inventory accounting at a product company. You know why the item ledger and the GL disagree and how to fix it. You have built a budget, a reforecast, and a cash forecast, and used the numbers to change a decision. Hands‑on Net Suite (or comparable ERP) and advanced Excel. You already use AI tools to cut manual work. You explain numbers clearly to non-accountants and say what you found, even when the message is difficult.
Nice to have:
CPA; public accounting background; multi-entity experience; lender reporting; an interest in golf. Additional Notes
Don’t check every box? Apply anyway. If you have run a close and accounted for inventory, we would rather meet you and have the conversation than lose you to a checklist. Systems that you will use: Net Suite, Shopify, Excel. We are privately held and owner-operated, with about 30 employees in Portland, Oregon. In-House Embroidery, Full Warehouse, and In-House Operation. Jones sells direct to consumer, through green grass golf shops and corporate accounts, and partners with international distributors.
Compensation and Benefits:
Competitive base salary, depending on experience. We are building a company-wide incentive plan that pays when Jones makes money. You will participate in it and help design, model, and administer it. This role is on-site in Portland, and relocation support is available for the right candidate. Health, dental, and vision benefits (employee premiums 100% covered, 50% for dependents)401(k) with company match (50% match up to a 4% contribution)Paid sick leave Paid time off Minimum of 8 paid holidays per year Product allowance
