Position Overview:
Nelson Stark Company is hiring an Assistant Safety Coordinator to support our Safety Department across commercial plumbing, site development, excavation, and underground utilities work throughout Greater Cincinnati, Dayton, and the Tri-state region. This hands-on role reports directly to our corporate safety director and is responsible for helping protect our crews in the field and on active jobsites. You will assist with inspections, training support, incident follow-up, documentation, and day-to-day implementation of safety programs for excavation, site utilities, commercial plumbing, pre-fabrication, and service operations. Key Responsibilities:
- Assist safety leadership with rollout and day-to-day administration of company safety programs, policies, and procedures across plumbing and site development operations.
- Support scheduled and unscheduled safety inspections of jobsites, excavations, utility installations, plumbing work areas, shops, yards, and equipment; document findings and help track corrective actions to closure.
- Help reinforce safe practices related to excavation and trenching, underground utilities, heavy equipment, confined space, fall protection, hot work, lockout/tagout, PPE, and traffic/pedestrian controls as applicable.
- Assist with new-hire safety orientation, toolbox talks, stretch-and-flex support, and refresher training for field crews, operators, plumbers, and support staff.
- Maintain accurate safety records, including incident and near-miss reports, inspection checklists, training attendance, JSAs/JHAs, permits, and related documentation.
- Help monitor jobsite conditions and coach crews on safe work practices in a professional, respectful manner.
- Participate in safety meetings and safety committee activities; prepare materials, take notes, and track action items as assigned.
- Help maintain SDS information, safety bulletin boards, first-aid/AED readiness, emergency response resources, and jobsite safety postings.
- Coordinate with superintendents, foremen, project managers, field supervisors, and shop leadership to address safety concerns quickly.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or coursework in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Environmental Health, or a related field preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience in construction safety, field operations, excavation, utilities, plumbing/mechanical trades, or a closely related role preferred. Motivated candidates with strong construction exposure and safety certifications will be considered.
- Working knowledge of construction safety principles; familiarity with OSHA construction standards is a plus.
- Comfortable on active jobsites, around heavy equipment, open excavations, and commercial construction environments.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills; able to work effectively with union crews, field leadership, and project teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and ability to learn safety or project software.
- Clean driving record with valid driver’s license.
- Ability to walk uneven terrain, climb stairs/ladders as needed for inspections, wear required PPE, and occasionally lift up to 25–40 lbs.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- OSHA 510 Cert (Construction strongly preferred).
- First Aid / CPR / AED certification.
- Experience supporting trench/excavation safety, underground utility work, heavy equipment operations, confined space, fall protection, or hot-work permitting.
- Prior experience with incident investigations, JSAs/JHAs, or construction safety audits.
- Interest in pursuing additional safety credentials (for example CHST or company-sponsored development).
