The mission of the Medical Physics division is to provide exemplaryradiation therapy to patients through high-quality clinicalservices and advanced technologies, investigation andimplementation of improved treatment planning and delivery methods, research programs designed to improve the efficiency and efficacyof radiation therapy, and clinical trials to assess the clinicaladvantages of radiation therapy treatment modalities. Massey CCCboth develops and participates in study protocols at the local, regional, and national levels. Additionally, the division ofMedical Physics is improving cancer care locally and nationallythrough comprehensive undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduateeducational programs. We offer a MS and PhD in Medical Physics and a postgraduate residency program in Radiation Oncology Physics(CAMPEP accredited).
Chief Purpose of Position:
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Virginia CommonwealthUniversity Health System has an immediate opening for a facultytherapeutic medical physicist (TMP) at the Instructor, Assistant orAssociate Professor level). This is a clinical medical physicistposition based primarily at the Richmond VA Medical Center, whichis professionally staffed by VCU faculty physicians and physicists. The successful candidate will provide clinical radiation therapyservices using state-of-the-art radiotherapy that includes: IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, SRS, IGRT, and HDR brachytherapy programs. Theindividual hired at this position will serve as a principalclinical physicist within our team and will also have theopportunity to participate in our dynamic clinical researchprogram. The VA Medical Center participates in the clinical physicsresidency training program and has 1 resident rotate from VCU on aquarterly basis all year round.
VCU and the VA Medical Center in Richmond enjoy a long-establishedrelationship and close proximity (less than 6 miles apart). The VARadiation Oncology team consists of 4 physicians, 2 Nurse Practitioners, 2 Registered Nurses, 5 Physicists, 9 Radiationtherapists, and 2 Dosimetrists. The service provides over 400 newtreatment plans a year and these include IMRT, SRS, 3D conformal,4D, SBRT, and IGRT using Eclipse. Resources include two TrueBeams, with 6DF couchs, optical surface monitoring, a Siemens Large BoreCT Simulator, prostate brachytherapy using Bravos HDR. Planningsystemsinclude, Eclipse with HyperArc, MIM Contouring, Radformation Autocontouring, and Aria v16.1. Currently activeresearch programs include 4 VA clinical trials with VCU andNCTN-based clinical trials. The VA cancer center recently received$5 million grant for lung precision oncology in which RadiationOncology has a leading role.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Teaching – The medical physicist is expected to participate inteaching radiation oncology and physics residents in theirrotation.
Research – The medical physicist is expected to participate inclinically-oriented research.
Service – As a faculty member, the medical physicist will serveon committees, including departmental, School of Medicine, and/orUniversity committees as necessary, as well as in a professionalcapacity in their field (i.e. reviewer, conference organizer, etc.).
Other/Administrative – A percentage of time and effort will bedevoted to academic service-related activities fosteringprofessional growth and other such assignments.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
M.S. or PhD in medical physics, physics, engineering, or aclosely related physical science discipline.
ABR Board certification eligibility in radiation oncologyphysics.
Demonstrated experience in IMRT, IGRT, SBRT, SRS, and HDRbrachytherapy.
Personal skills such as initiative, problem-solving, andteamwork.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong technical skills.
Experience in regulatory procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD degree in medical physics, physics, engineering, or aclosely related physical science discipline.
ABR board certification
At least three years of clinical experience.
