Start Date: 01/11/2027 End Date:07/09/2027 Ameri Corps Slot Classification:900 hours (26 weeks)Purpose: Stewards Individual Placements is an Ameri Corps affiliated program that provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and pr otect our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits, building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting the health of natural areas. The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The National Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world. Stewards, in partnership with Point Reyes National Seashore (PORE) is seeking a n Ameri Corps service member to assist National Park Service staff in maintaining and operating the seashore’s utility systems, primarily maintaining 13 small non-public systems and 6 public systems. Of the public systems, one is community and the rest transient non-community. One class 1 wastewater system with treatment pond, 7-8 pressurized septic systems and many traditional gravity septic systems are present. We serve visitors, employees, housed employees, a children's camp, hostel, a Coast Guard facility, multiple backcountry campgrounds, and beach facilities. Visitors, residents and all communities on our water and wastewater systems rely on proper maintenance of our systems. All nearby lakes, streams and the ocean rely on proper wastewater treatment. S upport will include testing chlorine residual levels, collect ing bacteriological samples, add ing chlorine to a water treatment system, repairing broken pipes and assist ing in vegetation removal around wells, water treatment sheds, and sewer ponds. The selected service member will be provide d with an opportunity to learn the skills required to provide safe drinking water, protect cultural and natural resources, and apply for future NPS water operator positions. The member will also study for and take the test to receive a water treatment level 1 certification. Description of
Duties: Assist in the oversight of a Parkwide Utility Infrastructure Project Assist in technical review of Water/Wastewater components of this project Members will observe contractors completing work on water and wastewater projects and be included in weekly meeting updates Operat e light trucks and other vehicles to access systems and move supplies and materials Collect water and bacteriological samples and perform water testing in accordance with Standard Methods and
State Requirements: Record water and wastewater data (e.g., meter readings) on local, state, and federal forms Perform minor repair to plumbing and chemical feed systems, which includes Lift Stations and Grinder Pumps Conduct routine system checks and monitor chlorine residuals Perform general maintenance and cleanup to pumphouses, treatment plants, laboratories, and vehicles Analyze water results and make corrections to treatment processes Assist with wastewater system maintenance and pumping operations Vegetation removal around wells, water treatment sheds, and sewer pond Complete hard copy and electronic paperwork, forms, and data-entry; compile and review information and create draft reports Job shadow other employees and work groups to gain exposure to other career paths and facets of park operations Assist supervisor and other administrative staff with tasks such as data collection and contract monitoring, fleet management, and supply inventory and monitoring Prepar e documents and reports using tablets, GIS, data management and word processing software
Qualifications: United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien At least 18 years of age, Veterans up to 35 years of age Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an Ameri Corps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check Capable of noticing and diagnosing utility problems Able to determine and implement sound and safe resolutions as utility issues arise Ability to be flexible and work within a team Positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills Organizational skills Our Commitment: Conservation Legacy is committed to the full consideration of all qualified individuals and will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations to perform essential job functions. Time Requirements: Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday at a full-time capacity of 40 hours a week, but exact service schedules may vary. Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
