Full-time Workplace: On-site / Hybrid; expected on-site approximately 3–4 days per week
Reports To:
Utility Business Director, with functional coordination with China-based Engineering
Travel:
Occasional travel for customer meetings, factory visits, FAT/SAT support, field activities, and project reviews About Ebon Energy Ebon Energy is building its U.S. presence in the power and energy infrastructure market, with a focus on transformer and power-distribution solutions serving utilities, data centers, and other critical infrastructure customers. As we expand our North American commercial and engineering capabilities, we are building a team that can work closely with customers from early technical evaluation and specification review through proposal, design coordination, manufacturing, testing, and project execution.
The Opportunity:
Ebon Energy is seeking an Application Engineer – Utility to provide front-end technical support for North American utility opportunities and serve as a key technical bridge between utility customers, the U.S. commercial team, and our engineering and manufacturing resources in China. This role will work closely with the Utility Business Director and customer engineering teams to review utility specifications, evaluate technical requirements, select and configure compliant transformer solutions, support bids and vendor qualification, address technical questions, and coordinate technical documentation throughout the opportunity and project lifecycle. The ideal candidate combines strong electrical engineering fundamentals with practical knowledge of distribution or power transformers, utility specifications, IEEE/ANSI standards, and electrical power-distribution systems. This is a customer-facing engineering role suited for someone who can independently interpret detailed utility specifications, identify compliance requirements and technical exceptions, communicate effectively with utility engineers and internal stakeholders, and translate North American customer requirements into executable engineering solutions.
What You’ll Do:
Review utility specifications, one-line diagrams, electrical drawings, data sheets, equipment schedules, and other technical requirements for transformer opportunities. Evaluate customer requirements and select or configure appropriate distribution and/or power transformer solutions for utility applications. Support technical evaluation of transformer ratings, voltage requirements, impedance, insulation levels, cooling methods, accessories, protection requirements, losses, testing requirements, and other application-specific parameters. Review customer requirements against applicable IEEE/ANSI standards, utility-specific standards, and other North American technical and regulatory requirements. Prepare and maintain compliance matrices, deviation lists, technical clarifications, technical proposal inputs, and customer responses for RFQs, RFPs, and utility bids. Identify specification gaps, exceptions, risks, and technical issues early in the opportunity cycle and coordinate resolution with internal engineering teams. Review drawings, technical submittals, data sheets, test requirements, and related engineering documentation before customer release. Lead or support customer technical meetings, specification reviews, design discussions, bid clarification meetings, and technical qualification activities. Support utility vendor qualification, approved-vendor registration, and technical prequalification processes as required. Work closely with the Utility Business Director and commercial team during RFQ/RFP evaluation, bid preparation, proposal development, and customer negotiations. Coordinate technical questions, specifications, and requirements with China-based engineering and manufacturing teams and ensure clear communication between U.S. customers and internal technical resources. Translate utility specifications, North American standards, and customer expectations into clear engineering inputs for internal teams. Support the shared Application Engineering resource pool during periods of peak workload and assist with Data Center or other cross-functional technical priorities as needed. Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), customer inspections, transformer testing, and project reviews as required. Provide technical input during project handoff from commercial development to engineering, manufacturing, and execution teams. Help strengthen Ebon Energy’s application-engineering processes, specification-review practices, technical documentation, and customer-facing engineering capabilities as the U.S. organization grows.
What We’re Looking For:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline. Experience with distribution transformers, power transformers, electrical power distribution, or related utility electrical equipment. Ability to independently read and interpret utility specifications, one-line diagrams, electrical drawings, data sheets, and technical documentation. Strong understanding of electrical power-distribution fundamentals and transformer applications. Working knowledge of IEEE/ANSI transformer standards and the ability to interpret customer-specific technical requirements. Ability to translate customer requirements into clear technical requirements and coordinate effectively with engineering and manufacturing teams. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with close attention to technical detail. Strong technical writing skills, including the ability to prepare technical clarifications, compliance responses, deviation lists, and customer-facing documentation. Strong verbal communication skills and confidence participating in customer technical discussions. Ability to work effectively across commercial, engineering, manufacturing, and project teams in different geographic locations and time zones. Ability to manage multiple customer opportunities, bids, and technical priorities in a fast-growing environment.
Preferred Experience:
Experience in transformer application engineering, utility engineering, electrical equipment application engineering, or technical sales engineering. Direct experience with distribution and/or power transformers. Experience supporting investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, electric cooperatives, EPCs, engineering firms, or other utility-sector customers. Familiarity with applicable IEEE C57, ANSI, NEMA, UL, DOE, and other transformer-related standards and requirements. Experience reviewing utility transformer specifications and preparing technical compliance and deviation documentation. Experience supporting utility RFQs, RFPs, competitive bids, or vendor qualification processes. Familiarity with transformer design considerations, testing requirements, losses, insulation systems, accessories, and performance requirements. Experience working directly with utility engineers, procurement teams, EPCs, consulting engineers, or other technical customers. Experience coordinating engineering or manufacturing activities across international teams is a plus. Familiarity with FAT/SAT processes, transformer testing, and customer technical inspections is preferred. Work Authorization: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. Why Join Ebon Energy? This is an opportunity to join Ebon Energy at an important stage of our U.S. growth and help build the technical foundation supporting our North American utility business. Rather than working within a narrowly defined engineering function, you will have the opportunity to work directly across customers, commercial teams, engineering, and manufacturing—from early utility specifications and application selection through bid support, technical proposal, design coordination, testing, and project execution. You will also play an important role in connecting North American utility requirements with Ebon’s global engineering and manufacturing capabilities and helping establish the processes and technical standards that will support the company’s continued U.S. growth. For an engineer who enjoys combining transformer technology, technical problem-solving, customer interaction, and cross-functional collaboration, this role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact as Ebon Energy expands in the North American utility and power-infrastructure market.
