Location: Waukesha, WI (Relocation can be provided!)
Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced ABB Robot Programmer to develop, commission and optimize robotic cell programs for industrial automation projects. The role focuses on creating efficient, reliable RAPID-based programs and offline simulations for ABB robots, integrating robotic systems with PLCs and other factory automation, and supporting installation and production teams to achieve high uptime and consistent cycle times.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop, test and deploy robot programs for ABB robotic systems using RAPID and RobotStudio, including offline programming and simulation.
Troubleshoot, debug and optimize robot cell programs and mechanical/fixture interactions to improve cycle time, accuracy and reliability.
Integrate robots with PLCs, I/O, vision systems and HMIs; develop and verify communication and safety interlocks.
Commission robotic cells on-site, support mechanical and electrical installation, and perform acceptance testing with production teams and customers.
Collaborate with design, controls and production engineering to define cell layout, tooling, end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) and part presentation.
Create and maintain clear documentation: programs, manuals, change logs, drawings and commissioning reports.
Provide technical support and training to operators, maintenance staff and customers to ensure safe, repeatable operation.
Apply safety standards and best practices for robot guarding, emergency stops, safe zones and compliance with relevant regulations.
Support continuous improvement initiatives by analyzing downtime, implementing program enhancements and participating in root-cause analysis.
Qualifications:
3+ years experience programming industrial robots with a strong emphasis on ABB robots (RAPID language) and RobotStudio offline programming.
Hands-on experience with ABB controllers (e.g., IRC5) and commissioning robotic cells.
Familiarity with Fanuc robot programming and differences between FANUC and ABB platforms is highly desirable.
Practical knowledge of industrial controls and PLC integration (Siemens, Allen-Bradley or similar), fieldbus protocols and I/O wiring.
Experience integrating vision systems, EOAT development and machine guarding/safety systems. Strong understanding of electrical schematics, mechanics of robotic cells and basic troubleshooting skills. Proven ability to debug on-site issues under production constraints and to optimize cycle time and repeatability.
Effective communication skills to work with cross-functional teams, write documentation and train end users.
Relevant technical diploma or degree in Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; ABB/robotics certifications are a plus.
Willingness to travel to customer sites for commissioning and support as required.
