Trust AccountantA confidential, established family office is seeking an experienced Trust Accountant to join its accounting team in New York City. This is a hands-on opportunity for an accounting and tax professional with strong trust taxation and private-client experience to work across tax compliance, trust administration, investment accounting, and general accounting. The ideal candidate will have significant experience preparing Form 1041 trust tax returns and working with high-net-worth individuals, trusts, foundations, partnerships, and related entities.
Responsibilities: Prepare federal and state trust tax returns, including Form 1041, as well as individual, gift, foundation, corporate, and partnership tax returns. Prepare annual trust accountings, extensions, estimated tax payments, and required 1099s. Manage trust administration, including quarterly distributions and trustee fee calculations. Review and interpret trust documents and related tax requirements. Support investment accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger activities. Prepare journal entries, year-end workpapers, and financial statements. Assist with annual audits for the family office and related foundations. Research and respond to federal, state, and local tax notices and inquiries. Address accounting, tax, and business-related questions from internal stakeholders and outside advisors. Identify opportunities to improve accounting and tax processes, systems, and procedures.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required.5–7+ years of accounting/tax experience, preferably within public accounting, a family office, private client practice, or similar environment. Demonstrated experience preparing trust tax returns (1041) is required. Experience with 1040, 1120, 1065, 990, and gift tax returns strongly preferred. CPA and/or EA preferred. Experience with CCH Access or similar tax preparation software required. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills preferred. Strong understanding of tax compliance, accounting principles, and financial reporting. Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Collaborative, positive, and team-oriented approach.
