Assistant Project Manager | Project Engineer | Public Works & Federal Construction
Location: San Diego, CA, with travel to project sites as needed
Employment type: Full time
We are partnering with a general contractor that delivers public works and federal construction projects across the United States. The team works on government and military facilities, aviation infrastructure, institutional buildings, and historic properties. Projects may involve design-build delivery, renovations in active facilities, and strict safety, quality, and documentation requirements. We are seeking an Assistant Project Manager who can support both estimating and project execution. You will work closely with project managers and field teams while coordinating subcontractors, tracking deliverables, and keeping project records accurate and current. This is a hands-on role with room to grow into estimating or project management.
What you'll do: Manage RFIs, submittals, procurement logs, meeting minutes, change documentation, and project correspondence. Coordinate with subcontractors, designers, owners, and field personnel to resolve open items and maintain project progress. Help track budgets, invoices, schedules, material deliveries, and potential cost or schedule impacts. Support bids through site visits, quantity takeoffs, subcontractor outreach, bid comparisons, and proposal preparation. Review drawings and specifications to identify scope gaps, coordination issues, and upcoming procurement needs. Assist with the formal documentation, quality, and safety processes required on public and federal projects.
What we're looking for: At least three years of construction experience, ideally as a Project Engineer, Assistant Project Manager, or in a similar role supporting multimillion-dollar projects. A bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field. Direct experience maintaining project logs and coordinating submittals, RFIs, procurement, or change orders. Ability to read plans and specifications, perform quantity takeoffs, and communicate effectively with office and field teams. Willingness to travel or temporarily work at out-of-region project sites when required. Ability to complete the background check and drug testing required for access to certain government or secure facilities. Experience with public works, USACE or NAVFAC projects, design-build, historic preservation, or work in occupied facilities is especially valuable. Familiarity with federal quality and safety documentation is a plus. If you are looking for broader project responsibility and the opportunity to work on technically challenging public projects, apply or message me directly for a confidential conversation.
