Apply for this role (opens in a new tab)Project Type: Onsite Site Survey – Large Warehouse / Distribution Center
Location: Phoenix, AZ (Local Candidates)
Scope of WorkWe are seeking an experienced Low Voltage Cabling Architect to conduct an onsite survey at a large warehouse or distribution center. The engineer will assess the existing low-voltage cabling infrastructure, identify cabling requirements, validate network device locations, and provide recommendations for future installations or infrastructure upgrades. Site Walkthrough and Assessment- Conduct a detailed walkthrough of the warehouse, distribution center, and associated office areas.- Review the existing low-voltage infrastructure, including data cabling, network outlets, cable pathways, and equipment locations.- Identify potential locations for network racks, IDF/MDF rooms, wireless access points, cameras, access control devices, and other low-voltage systems.- Assess warehouse layout, ceiling heights, racking arrangements, operational areas, and environmental constraints that may affect cabling installations. Structured Cabling Assessment- Inspect existing copper and fiber-optic cabling infrastructure, where applicable.- Evaluate existing cable trays, conduits, overhead pathways, ladder racks, and other cable management systems.- Identify potential cable routes between MDF/IDF rooms, network racks, workstations, warehouse zones, and equipment locations.- Assess cable pathway capacity, accessibility, and any obstacles that could affect installation.- Identify areas requiring new cabling, cable extensions, pathway modifications, or infrastructure upgrades. Network and Low-Voltage Device Location Planning- Review potential mounting locations for wireless access points, IP cameras, access control devices, and other low-voltage equipment as applicable to the project.- Identify network drops required for warehouse workstations, printers, scanners, operational equipment, and office areas.- Evaluate cable routing requirements for high-bay warehouse environments and areas with limited accessibility.- Identify power availability, mounting requirements, and installation constraints that may affect device placement. MDF/IDF and Equipment Room Assessment- Inspect existing MDF/IDF rooms and telecommunications cabinets, where accessible.- Document rack locations, available rack space, cable termination points, patch panels, and existing cable management.- Assess potential locations for additional racks, cabinets, and network equipment.- Identify any space, accessibility, cooling, or cable management concerns. Measurements, Photos, and Documentation- Capture warehouse layout details and approximate measurements relevant to cabling routes.- Document proposed cable pathways, equipment locations, and network drop requirements.- Take clear photographs of existing racks, cable trays, pathways, IDF/MDF rooms, ceiling structures, and proposed installation areas.- Mark proposed cable routes and device locations on available floor plans or site drawings, where provided.- Record approximate cable distances and quantities for planning and estimation purposes. Recommendations and Bill of Materials (BOM)- Provide recommendations for structured cabling routes and infrastructure improvements.- Identify estimated cable types, quantities, termination points, patch panels, racks, pathways, and related materials required.- Highlight installation challenges, safety considerations, access restrictions, and any special equipment requirements.- Provide preliminary material and labor estimates if requested by the project team.
Site Survey Report and Deliverables:
Upon completion of the site survey, the engineer must provide:- Site survey report summarizing existing conditions and findings.- Photo documentation of key areas and infrastructure.- Proposed cable routes and device locations.- Preliminary cable count, estimated lengths, and termination requirements.- Identification of new cabling requirements and infrastructure gaps.- Preliminary Bill of Materials (BOM), if required.- List of site constraints, risks, assumptions, and recommendations.- Follow-up requirements or clarifications needed before installation begins.
Required Skills and Experience:
Experience in low-voltage cabling design, structured cabling, or telecommunications infrastructure.- Previous experience conducting site surveys in large warehouses, distribution centers, industrial facilities, or logistics environments.- Knowledge of Cat6/Cat6A copper cabling, fiber-optic cabling, patch panels, cable trays, conduits, and cable management systems.- Familiarity with MDF/IDF layouts, network racks, wireless access point placement, and low-voltage device connectivity.- Ability to read floor plans, perform basic measurements, document cable pathways, and prepare survey reports.- Strong documentation, communication, and problem-solving skills.- Awareness of warehouse safety requirements, including working around forklifts, high-bay storage racks, and restricted-access areas. Required Tools- Laptop or tablet for documentation and reviewing floor plans.- Measuring tool or laser distance meter.- Smartphone or camera for site photos.- Basic hand tools, if required for inspection.- PPE required by the site, including safety shoes, high-visibility vest, and hard hat where applicable.
