Quality Edge is a leading manufacturer of metal exterior building productions based in Walker, MI with additional facilities in Savannah, GA, Stafford, NY and Arlington, TX. We are seeking a hands-on Safety Manager who will report to the VP of HR/Safety and be responsible for reinforcing our safety culture, leading the established safety programs, updating or enhancing programs, and ensuring that QE is compliant with all state and federal safety regulations and providing the required safety training to staff. This position requires enforcing company health and safety guidelines, evaluating equipment and processes for safety, and inspecting the workspaces to ensure they are up to our safety standards. The Safety Manager will help lead our safety programs, be the safety resource for plant operations, and measure safety standards in the workplace.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Maintain all safety related programs and documentation for all locations. Manage and provide all required safety training for new hires and annual refresher training, fork truck certifications and maintain all safety training documentation. Manage use of chemicals within locations and maintain company SDS log for all locations. Manage safety inspections on a regular basis and report results and resolutions to management. Manage our Safety reporting system and follow up on open items for resolution. Suggest revisions to production methods and employee activity to improve safety. Research, evaluate and suggest changes to safety gear (PPE) and supplies. Stay up to date on new state and federal health and safety regulations. Manage emergency drills to gauge employee readiness and report results to management. Consult with VP of HR/Safety regarding recommended new safety procedures. Respondto any workplace-related health issues, injuries and/or accidents, perform first aid if necessary, investigate incidents, file reports and manage any follow-up required. Coordinate with HR Manager on workers’ compensation documentation and filings. Manage safety vendors for PPE programs, first aid kits, inspections, hearing tests, noise/air testing and safety shoes. Lead the Safety Committee meetings and participate in corporate Safety Committee. Produce any company required safety reporting.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Can effectively work with operations to make the best decisions on safety for the operations team. Can work with HR/Safety team to effectively manage a corporate safety program. Demonstrates a broad knowledge of state and federal safety guidelines and the ability to apply them effectively and practically to the workplace. Able to read and interpret OSHA/MIOSHA documentation. Willing to get familiar with manufacturing equipment, machinery and products to establish a deep understanding of what and how we do things – mechanically inclined and willing to engage physically on shop floor. Possesses strong leadership skills and the ability to influence behavior with those that do not report directly to them. Communicates clearly and effectively. Pays close attention to detail with strong organizational skills. Possesses solid problem-solving and analytical abilities with overlaying common sense. Works well with a team. Possesses strong writing skills.
Education and Experience: 10-15 years’ experience in a lead safety role is required. Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Safety Management, or related field is preferred. OSHA certification a plus. Travel to other locations at least 2xs per year required. Salary commensurate with experience.
